The Acorn Academy is run by Julie Allis Scholes ALAM (Pub. Spkg. Dip.) - Equity Member (Principal Teacher) and Ewan Stevenson BEng - Equity Member (Assistant Teacher).
Julie is a professional actress and teacher of speech & drama. Since obtaining her Actor's Equity Card by the age of 18, she enjoys acting in theatre, television and film as well as role-play acting for corporate training.
She has also worked on the production side of the Business: on various shows for Central Television, backstage at The Theatre Royal, Nottingham, as an Acting ASM at The Grand Opera House, York and for BBC Radio Nottingham on Dennis McCarthy's shows.
Her performance and production skills place her in an excellent position to be able to convey this knowledge to the children in her classes.
Julie holds a certificate in Basic Counselling Skills as these are often important when teaching, especially in private lessons.
Julie’s parents established Jaykay Voice & Speech Training in 1978 and her first experience of speech & drama exams came later on when, having seen other children taking exams and being presented with certificates, she asked – at the age of 5 – if she too could have what she called a ‘stickifat’. Having successfully passed her first reading exam at that age she did, indeed, get her first certificate!
Having trained for and passed many more exams since, in various aspects of speech & drama, she is thrilled to teach others a subject she loves and has been doing so now for nearly twenty years. She always likes to teach in a caring, supportive and friendly manner and does this both with Jaykay Voice & Speech Training and The Acorn Academy.
Ewan studied Electronics & Music Technology at Newark & Sherwood College and The University of York before working for 12 years in corporate IT. In 2008 he realised his dream of leaving the corporate world behind and working full time with Julie in their various businesses which enable them to combine their interests and talents. He is also now able to put some of the skills learned at university into practice in the Academy's video & audio productions.
While currently assisting Julie in the classes, Ewan is expanding upon previous acting experience and also training to teach speech & drama.
Harry, our dog, is an integral part of the team. He helps the children with, amongst other things, confidence-building and is a source of motivation and encouragement. With shy children and autistic students in particular he gives a feeling of safety and is someone they find easy to approach and associate with. The children absolutely love him and even get him acting with them in their improvisations. In fact, he enjoys it so much, he too is training for theatre, television and film work!
They work with The Magical Adventure Theatre, which is a touring theatre company specialising in shows for children, and over the years this has taken them to many interesting and exciting venues. They also now have their own touring theatre company, Storytelling Adventures.
Julie & Ewan met in 1992 at Newark & Sherwood College. They are now married and work together as a team in a number of different ventures.
